White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany held a briefing on Tuesday and took questions on several topics, including COVID-19 as the pandemic continues to impact the U.S.

McEnany addressed President Donald Trump’s calls for North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper to give the green light for an in-person Republican National Convention this summer, saying Trump wants to see it go ahead with a “cooperative governor.” She also would not say if RNC officials or Trump would consider a virtual convention should COVID-19 numbers spike, but advised they’ll assess the facts “on a day-by-day basis.”

The press secretary also said Trump was “displeased” with actions being taken by China regarding national security laws proposed for Hong Kong, and said the president doesn’t see how Hong Kong could “remain a financial hub if China takes over.”

During the briefing, McEnany also defended the president’s recent tweets and retweets relating to a conspiracy theory involving TV host Joe Scarborough and a former aide who died at his office during Scarborough’s time in Congress. The body of Lori Kaye Klausutis, 28, was found in Scarborough’s Fort Walton Beach, Florida, congressional office on July 20, 2001. Trump has long feuded with Scarborough, now a host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” show, and has repeatedly tried to implicate him in the death. Police did not press any charges against Scarborough over the death.

As of Tuesday, the U.S. had more than 1.6 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 98,294 deaths.
